Carlton B. Washington

Carlton B. Washington is the Executive Director of the South Carolina State Employees Association, SCSEA. In this role he serves as the chief lobbyist, representing the association in all public and private forums including testifying before the South Carolina General Assembly committees, subcommittees, and public venues. The SCSEA was organized in 1946 to advance the welfare of state employees and retirees. The SCSEA also promotes efficiency in the administration of the business and public services of state government.

Prior to this, Washington was the principal in SouthTrac, a public relations and governmental affairs firm representing clients at every level of government and community engagement.  The firm specializes in developing corporate/community partnerships, crisis management, public outreach, public education and communication services. The firm operates today under the direction of Carlton’s wife, Myra Camille, who serves as Chief Executive Officer.

In addition, Washington formerly served as a South Carolina Deferred Compensation Commissioner for the South Carolina Retirement System. Washington also currently serves as an executive committee member of the Sumter Branch NAACP, Sumter County Sheriff’s Community Advisory Board, National Council of Negro Women, Alzheimer’s Association, ALS Association, American Legion, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. and Chairman of I-CAR, a new community organization that shares a common cultural and historical heritage of citizens in Rembert, South Carolina. The goal of I-CAR is to work for the public benefit of citizens living in rural areas.

In addition, Washington served as a 1st Lieutenant in the United States Army Reserve and National Guard. Washington was an academic scholarship graduate of South Carolina State University and a graduate of Leadership South Carolina. Washington also serves as Chairman of Dennis Farms Development Initiative which is a private community service program established to promote quality of life and health of area seniors.

Carlton is the son of the late Jesse and Annie G.D. Washington of Rembert, South Carolina. Carlton’s mother taught at Delaine Elementary School for 36 years and his father served as Assistant Principal at Ebenezer, ending his career as Principal of Rafting Creek Elementary School.

Carlton has three children, Faith Washington, Carlton B. Washington II, and Jared Washington. He also has one granddaughter, Camille Washington.
